Karoake "Revolution Presents: American Idol" video game

So you weren't able to make it out to the American Idol auditions last year and now that the new season is on, you're kicking yourself. You know you are just as good as some of the people they've already let through.

Now there's a way for you to find out how you would do as an American Idol contestant.

All you need is a Playstation 2 and "Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol" by Konami, the video game.

You'll be judged by "rough representations" of Randy and Simon, and "Laura," who for whatever reason, is filling in for Paula Abdul for the game. In fact, there's no reference to Paula Abdul in the game at all. Interesting...

You pick an avatar to sing your song, and you can even import a photo of your face into the game and have it placed onto the avatar's body. There's a headset microphone included so you do actually sing.

You can only choose from 40 songs, but having Simon berate you personally is an experience you just can't put a price on.

'Daughtry' #1 album on Billboard

2006 American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry and his band "Daughtry" broke a record as the first Idol finalist not to finish in the top two to have a #1 album on the Billboard 200.

Yes, that's #1. Daughtry's self-titled album has experienced a surge in sales this past week, mostly driven by the hot first single, "It's Not Over."

In the digital world, Daughtry is also a smash success with the album being the top digital download for the second consecutive week.

Good for Chris and a reminder that even just being on Idol can launch your career, whether you win or not.

Reflections on New York auditions

Well with the Memphis auditions turning out to be relatively normal (compared to last week's), New York was anything but.

Paula, Simon, Randy plus guest judge and legendary songwriter,Carol Bayer Sager sent 35 lucky people to Hollywood tonight, but not without some truly bizarre and disturbing auditions.

What was with everyone in New York being so overdramatic?! The soap opera 'Days Of Our Lives' thing with "Ashanti" was priceless, who just couldn't take no for an answer and was begging the judges to let her stay without them getting a word in edge wise.

Are they twins or just BFFs?.. from New Jersey came two girls *so* into themselves, but thankfully could actually sing too. Amanda Coluccio and her BFF Antonella Barba both made it through to Hollywood, with the big irony being that the judges thought Antonella was better than Amanda. Amanda has taken professional lessons; Antonella has not.

There was also the VERY emotional Kia Thornton who despite being named after a Korean car company, belted out an Aretha Franklin song with almost as much grace and panache as the diva herself. Kia couldn't stop bawling her eyes out though when the judges told her she was going to Hollywood. Hard not to be anything but thrilled for her.

On Day Two, after an overall dismal Day One, expectations were running high for the first contestant who walked through the door. Jenry Bejarano (yes, that's Jenry NOT Henry) didn't disappoint. The extremely good looking guy delivered a beautiful rendition of "I'd Give Anything To Fall In Love." Paula practically melted into a puddle in her chair.

Day Two of the New York auditions also kicked off without Simon; he was late for the first half of the morning. We later found out (through a rejected contestant's freak out on camera) that the crew were out drinking until 3 a.m. the night before. Tsk tsk Simon.

Who could forget the girl who was horrendously bad and off-key, trying desperately to convince the judges that you don't need to be a singer to be an American Idol? I thought the best part was when they told her to look at the wall behind her and pointed out all the past American Idols, ALL AMAZING SINGERS. *snap,* now go away.

Canadian-born American Idol-crasher Jory Steinberg was a surprise. At first when she started bragging about all the time she spent meeting the Queen, the Prime Minister, blah blah blah, I was thinking here we go again. But she actualy turned out to be one of the best of the day with her peformance of Tina Arena's "Chains." Jody was born in Ottawa, Ontario but now lives in Santa Monica CA.

Simon Cowell met his mirror image at the auditions too.. a guy who looked just like him, and apparently also George Michael, as he wouldn't shut up about. Oh, and he's a BIG Kelly Clarkson fan. Every season, why does an extremely, obviously gay man sing "Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson in a woman's voice??? I swear it's a conspiracy or something.

Rachel Zevita walked onto the audition floor with three voices and seemingly, three different personalities. Lucky for her, they were all pretty good, and the Opera singer was sent to Hollywood.

Virigina boy and Justin Timberlake lookalike/wannabe Chris Richardson was VERY good, with Simon predicting" "You could surprise us in the next rounds." Great voice and a great look. Imagine him and Timberlake going head to head on the charts!

Finally there was Nicholas Pedro, who you probably recognized from last season of Idol. You see, last year he MADE it to Hollywood -- and then dropped out!!! He couldn't remember the words to "Buttercup" during the group trials, so he dropped out of the competition and regretted it ever since. Lucky for Nicholas, his voice is still golden and he was sent back to Hollywood this year. Definitely one to watch.

Memphis roundup; Tonight: New York

Last night's Memphis audition show sent 22 contestants through to Hollywood... and that's more than the much larger cities of Minneapolis and Seattle.

Contestant Paul Stacy missed the birth of his child to be at the Memphis auditions. After his rendition of "My Girl," the judges weren't completely sold on him but sent him through to Hollywood anyways.

The nervous Melissa Dolittle wowed the judges with her rendition of "For Once In My Life," sending her to Hollywood. Randy and Simon both say she's one of the best singers on the show.

Sean Michel, with the "Fidel Castro" beard sings the Johnny Cash song, "God's Gonna Cut You Down." It's soulful, if not deep enough.. Simon, Paula and Randy all say yes.

Dani McCulloch busts out with Aretha Franklin. Randy isn't blown away, but Simon says he likes the "blues" part of her voice. Paula agrees and she is sent through.

Sundance Head (yes, that's his real name) is the son of 60s singer Roy Head (who had a #1 single in 1965) blows the judges away with his rendition of "Stormy Monday." He gets a full yes from the judges and Simon predicts he will make the finals.

Simon vs. Bush Baby controversy continues

Simon Cowell is not stepping down from his rough criticism of last week's Idol contestants, especially in Seattle, where he called one of them a "bush baby" because of his beady eyes.

Entertainment Weekly columnist Michael Slezak wrote: "The American Idol auditions in Seattle sometimes crossed the line into outright cruelty."

Talk show host Rosie O'Donnell also slammed Simon for his "bush baby" comment publicly on the View.

But Simon is adamant that potential contestants know what they're getting themselves into and shouldn't take the judges off the cuff remarks too seriously.

The View talk show panelist Rosie O'Donnell is lashing out at the American Idol judges -- in particular Simon -- for their criticism of contestants at the Minneapolis and Seattle auditions.

"The judges shouldn't make fun of someone's physcial appearance and when they leave the room, laugh hysterically," said Rosie.

On last week's shows, Simon referred to one memorable contestant as a "Bush Baby," asked an overweight contestant if he borrowed Randy's pants and call the tall, black girl a giraffe.

Rosie's got her knickers in a knot over this one.

I think the following video clip of the Pussycat Dolls "Don't Cha" perfectly sums up the Seattle Idol show.

Wow, Seattle.. what a doozy. When Simon said this was the worst audition city he had ever seen -- he wasn't kidding! Some of the weirdest people I have ever seen on TV, whether it was big "Red" or the big-eyed monkey love child and his mentally challenged best bud/lover.

Red is clearly a serial killer, if you weren't already dead after his attempt at Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Video below:

Giving Red a run for his money for the weirdest audition EVER was the contestant with the VERY unfortunate name, Nicholas Zitzmann, who looked and sounded just as bad as his name sounds. Video below:

Thankfully the last contestant of the day, 28 y/o Rudy Cardenas originally from Venzeula and now living in L.A., saved the day with his fantasic performance of "Open Arms" by Journey. Paula looks like she's about to melt into a puddle during Rudy's peformance. Video below:

Seattle, you outdid yourselves!! I seriously doubt it gets any worse that this.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday, Idol heads to Memphis TN and New York, New York.

And one more thing, this week's Minneapolis and Seattle audition shows were the highest rated EVER for FOX, so you can be assured Idol will be around for a long time to come.

Premiere Night 1: Minneapolis / Tomorrow Seattle!

Idol tore through Minneapolis with a vengenance, with over 10,000 hopefuls packing the local stadium to audition, but only 17 getting through.

The first episode of the new season of American Idol wasn't without several shots at the auditioners in Minneapolis including Randy's comment: "Minneworst."

But there were some diamonds amongst the rough in the Twin Cities. Read accounts of their peformances below... including the good and the bad.

Tomorrow night, Idol continues it's premiere with another two-hour special, this time from Seattle. And the show from the Emerald City promises to be a doozy. "It was the worst city ever," said Simon. And by looks of the auditions, one of the strangest ever too.

Josh Flom: "Chris opened a lot of doors for me."

From Chicago City, MN comes Josh Flom who is a huge fan of Chris Daughtry and rock music.

But his raspy, deep rocker voice didn't win over judges during his performance of Fuel's "Bad Day."

Randy and Simon criticized the performance as not being "believable" enough.. and Paula was worried about Josh straining his voice. But Josh got a second chance before being rejected; the judges allowed him to come back in 15 minutes and sing an ABBA song, as if it was ABBA night on Idol.

Josh sang "Dancing Queen" in the exact same style as the Fuel song earlier. So he was sent home, and told to stick with his band.

Simon: "In a year's time you are going to thank us for not putting you through to the next round."

Jason Anderson: The horrible juggler, worse singer

Jason Anderson tried to juggle his way to Hollywood. Unfortunately his singing sucked, and so did his juggling.

"You've summed up Minneapolis mate. Useless at everything," said Simon.

After the pitiful audition, Jason went on to scream into the camera "Fuck them!" "I've never been so insulted in my life!" and then proceeded to ball his eyes out in front of his mom and Ryan Seacrest.

Pathetic and definitely NOT going to Hollywood.

Sarah Krueger: Somewhere Over A Rainbow

From Eau Claire MN comes Sarah Kruger and her beautiful performance of "Somewhere Over A Rainbow." Kruger goes to school in Duluth and travelled to Minneapolis to audition. It was worth it.

Rachel Jenkins

From Minnetonka, MN comes Rachel Jenkins.

Her husband is an army reservist and currently stationed in Baghdad. Rachel said she was auditioning for him. Luckily, she was fantastic.

Rachel sang "His Eyes On A Sparrow." Simon said she started out really good, but at the end her voice fell apart a bit.

Still, Rachel was good enough to go onto Hollywood.

Matt Sato: California Dreaming

Matt Sato was a surprise. The young choir boy delivered a surprisingly good performance of "California Dreaming" by the Mamas and the Papas. The judges were genuinely surprised, saying they didn't expect him to be that good.

Simon: "Your voice is very mature for being 16."

Going to Hollywood! Now Matt can really be California Dreaming.

Dayna Dooley hits notes that can break glass

Ah, Dayna Dooley. The girl with the nicest boss ever. So nice that he flew her and her sister to Minneapolis to audition for Idol. Too bad it didn't work out.

I really wanted her to be good, and so did the judges. But her audition of Shaka Khan "Tell Me Something Good," was anything but good. It was awful ... and at times frightening!

Her Mariah Carey note was terrifying and I thought the speakers in my TV were going to explode.

Making matters worse Simon was positive the girl was in love with her boss!

Jarrod Fowler: The hot and talented Navy Boy

Fresh off his win of "Reagan Idol," the talent competition held on his navy ship, the USS Ronald Reagan, expectations were high for Jarrod Fowler as soon as he stepped foot in front of the judges.

Fowler sang Rascal Flatts' ballad "Bless the Broken Road," beautifully. He has a velvety smooth and beautiful voice.

Jarrod is going to Hollywood and is definitely one to watch.

Matthew Volna: Think he's Johnny Cash

Shakira, Shakira!! Perla Meneses

The sassy, confident Peral Meneses started out her audition trying to pick up Ryan Seacrest, who I am pretty sure is g-a-y, asking him if he liked Spanish girls. Apparently he does.

Anywayyyy.. Perla from Colombia (just like Shakira! Shakira!), dazzled the judges with her genuinely great voice. She started off singing Blondie "Call Me," which was good, but perhaps too heavily accented, but really shone singing the song of the girl she looked just like: Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie."

A unanimous YES from the judges.

Denise Jackson: From crack baby to Hollywood

Denise Jackson hasn't had it easy. Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, she was labelled a crack baby. Luckily her grandmother rescued her from the streets and in turn, rescued her musical gift -- an incredible singing voice.

Easily one of the best auditions of the night, Denise sang "You're Gonna Love Me," by Jennifer Holiday.

And it's true -- the judges loved her and so did I. After belting it out, Denise is headed to Hollywood.

The diva himself, Jesse Holloway graced the Idol judges tonight in Minneapolis with his nauseating and hilarious attempt at covering Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."

Jesse set expectations high by saying he can "hit Mariah Carey's notes." But does Mariah Carey leave to go get a drink of water during the middle of his performance? And then come back and humilate himself all over again??

Troy Benham: The Urban Amish

Contestant Troy Benham was sick of living in an Amish Paradise in Wisconsin, so he decided it would be a good idea to audition for Idol.

Troy has never seen American Idol, because he doesn't own a TV. Can you guess where this is going?!

Troy delivered on disappointment with a truly bizarre performance of some old crazy Amish song about spitting in people's faces and making fun of them. I am confused.

Simon's comment said it all: "What the HELL was that?!"

Jessica Rhodes attempts Jewel

Mall of America Minneapolis-based make-up artist Jessica Rhodes was the first serious contestant up on Idol and it started out promising.

She is a HUGE fan of Jewel, and just her luck, Jewel is guest judging this show. But what could have been a great moment for Jessica turned into heartbreak after she sang "Who Will Save Your Soul."

Unfortunately no one could save the song and Jessica was panned by all the judges. Getting rejected sucks, but take it in stride, girl! She practically collapsed to the floor in hysteria, crying and sobbing uncontrollably.

Tuesday is the night! Only one more day until the new season of American Idol. Season 6 kicks off tomorrow evening and Wednesday with two two-hour shows.

Catch the premiere on Fox in the U.S. and CTV in Canada at 8pm ET/PT.

There's already some surprises emerging about the new season of Idol. Reports speculate a "Beatles night" is in the works, continuing on the theme of different music themed performances.

More interestingly, the idea of an online competition to write the winning Idol's song is being floated about. The contest would allow a fan to write and produce a song and then upload to a website.

And before the finale show in April, a star studded special is in the works, which will add an additional night to the Idol schedule.

Admist all of the hype and excitement about the beginning of a new Idol season, judge Paula Abdul is attracting controversy after several recent television interviews where she appeared to be drunk.

Katharine McPhee new album cover

American Idol alumni Katharine McPhee has unveiled the cover for her debut album, dropping January 30th, 2007.

Details of what we can expect to hear have been slim, but Katharine's first single off the new album should hit airwaves early in the New Year. We do know however, that there will be NO artist "collaborations" on the album -- it's all Katharine.

Advertising on American Idol not cheap

With the rise of PVRs and the internet, many advertisers are feeling the pinch as more and more viewers fast-forward through commercials or don't watch them at all.

American Idol is no stranger to product placement and carefully integrated advertising and Season 6 will take it to a new level.

Returning as sponsors for the new season of Idol are Coca-Cola, Cingular and Ford. The price tag for advertising during Idol is reported to be in excess of $25 million per season -- that's a lot of dough!

But with the massive ratings numbers Idol receives, it's no surprise the sponsors are willing to pay whatever FOX and the show's producers demand.

Sponsorship advertising will be similar to seasons past, with a few new elements.

What you can expect to see:
Cingular: The cell phone service will once again encourage viewers to text message vote for their favorites using the company's phones. Also returning this year, viewers will be able to download "live" performances to be used as ringtunes.

Ford: The car company's vehicles will be featured as usual during vignettes in the show -- but it's not yet know which model this year... my guess is the Fusion or new EDGE SUV as the Focus is looking a little dated. The next Idol and runner-up will also receive their own Ford.

Coca-Cola: Look for the return of the "Red Room," where contestants get ready before performing, and of course, the Coke cups placed in front of all the judges. New this season, viewers will be able to submit their own design for the Coke cups, to be shown sitting in front of the judges during one of the episodes.

Last season (Season 5) was the biggest yet for American Idol, with the show averaging 31 million viewers a night in the U.S. alone. The show also has a large audience in Canada and in several other coutries.

Katharine McPhee album release date pushed back

She admits the original release date before Christmas was "a poor time to sell an album." Katharine also added that some of tracks are still be worked out, but recording is complete.

Carrie Underwood to perform for Persian Gulf troops

American Idol winner and country superstar Carrie Underwood is headed to the Persian Gulf to entertain US troops stationed overseas.

Her spokesperson can't release dates or specifics for "security reasons," understandable since a trip to the region entails a fair bit of risk.

Carrie is said to be "completely excited" about performing for the troops and is looking forward to meeting them.

The trip caps off a banner year for Carrie with several top honors and the top-selling country album of the year under her proverbial belt.

Taylor Hicks' first album after Idol debuts

Taylor Hicks' first album after winning American Idol is set to be released tomorrow (December 11, 2006)

It's already the 19th best selling album on amazon.com, from pre-orders alone.

The album is getting positive reviews overall from music journalists, but some are seeing it as a compromise between Hicks' true talent, and what's marketable in music today.

"Taylor's voice is crisp and clear, rich and soulful throughout," says music journalist Rona Elliot in an article in USA Today. "His backup singers and musicians are impeccable. The rhythm and musicianship are tight and bright. So the production values are great. There are soaring power ballads that lift you up and pop ditties I'd rather live without.

"(He's) honoring his influences, but I don't hear the originality I think the guy is capable of. He is not Van Morrison, Joe Cocker or Leon Russell. He's establishing his own musical footing but has only taken baby steps."

Darryl Sterdan of Canada's Sun national newspaper chain writes:

Dream Myself Awake is a midtempo, arena-sized pop-rocker that totally sounds like Rob Thomas -- partly because that's who wrote it, and partly because this CD was produced by Matt Serletic, who has worked with Thomas, Santana, Collective Soul and the like.

The Right Place is a fragile, gospel-tinged piano ballad that sounds a bit like Randy Newman, but was actually written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance for Hicks' hero Ray Charles. Despite their stylistic variety, all three of the tunes we heard go pretty well with Hicks' raspy yet versatile voice, which can hit the pure high notes and growl in the gutter with equal success.

Fans of Idol may be disappointed the CD does not contain his first post-show single Do I Make You Proud. But if the rest of this disc is as promising as the preview, something tells us the Soul Patrol are going to be mighty proud anyway.

Elliott Yamin scores free dental work

Former American Idol contestant Elliott Yamin is all smiles these days after getting a major mouth makeover.

Yamin recently got $50,000 free of dental work from a Beverly Hills dentist, including new veneers and alignment. The work took 20 hours to complete.

Only two years after being sacked from American Idol and told by Simon Cowell "she just wasn't up to par," Jennifer Hudson finds herself starring in what is likely to be one of the biggest movies of the year, Dreamgirls, admist rave reviews for her performance.

Starring alongside castmates Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy and others, there's increasing buzz Jennifer Hudson may even snag an Oscar for her role.

Hudson said she channeled all of her energy from her American Idol downfall into Dreamgirls.

Katharine McPhee album this January

American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee is planning to release her debut RCA album, appropiately titled "Never Saw It Coming," on January 30, 2007.

The sound will be a mix of pop and urban influences and very top-40 radio friendly. Producers include Timbaland protege Nate Hill, as well as writing from Babyface, Kara Duoguardi and Ryan Leslie.

McPhee says she's waiting to see how the album does before announcing a tour schedule.

Chris Daughtry's debut album 'Daughtry' hits store shelves this Tuesday, Nov 21.

His performances have been getting generally good reviews, but a recent review of one of his shows in the NY Post criticized his stage presence.

The reviewer said Chris doesn't seem to be comfortable under the concert lights and was visibly nervous -- barely making eye contact with the audience.

Taylor Hicks to sing national anthem at NASCAR

Catch American Idol Taylor Hicks on your TV screen this weekend, as he will be singing the national anthem at Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Meanwhile, Taylor's old band, "The Taylor Hicks Band," has changed their name to LIMBO and their debut album will be released this Nov. 21 on iTunes.

And just so you know, Taylor's old bandmates were very supportive of his decision to try out for Idol and there's no hard feelings.

Kellie Pickler admits she was abused

Sad news from Kellie. She recently admitted to USA Today she was a victim of child abuse growing up.

Many fans know Kellie's father is a drug abuser, and has been in-and-out of prison for armed robbery.

Kellie bravely told the paper that it was at the hands of her mother she suffered physical and mental abuse, and that she doesn't know her mother's current whereabouts.

She also said her mother told her to commit suicide when she was a child.

"I remember my mother and I were in the kitchen and I said, 'I wish God would take me away, I'd much rather be dead than live here with you.' She took a knife out, set it on the counter and said, 'Here, do it then.' I was in fourth grade. Of course I never would have acted upon it, but it's done a lot of emotional scarring."

Such sad, sad news from a great person.

Simon Cowell to Seattle: You suck!

American Idol auditions recently rolled through the Emerald City, Seattle, Washington, and for judge Simon Cowell, the experience was pure misery.

Simon recently lamented the lack of talent in Seattle to USA Today, and said "This season, Seattle will be remembered for something more than coffee.."

He also cut deeper, saying the city had the worst group of singers he had ever seen, and the weather sucked as well.

Guess Simon can't take a little rain... bring an umbrella next time, bloke, and maybe some bodyguards now too.

Kellie Pickler trying to break semifinalist curse

A good article from Associated Press about how Kellie Pickler is trying to break the American Idol "semi-finalist" curse.

Most Idol runners-up haven't exactly been successful in their post-Idol music careers -- save for Clay Aiken. If they're lucky, their first single will have a respectful showing, but after that... it's all downhill.

Things seem to be going better for Kellie though, and her album "Small Town Girl" debuted on the country charts at #1 this week.

Industry insiders say what's different about Kellie is that she invokes curiosity.. people naturally are interested and it's helping her.

Jack Isquith, Executive Director of Music Industry Relations at AOL Music, which has provided heavy "Idol" coverage, said all the talk about Pickler has contributed to a buzz that surrounds her.
"I think she's a little controversial because there's certainly been talk about whether she played dumb on 'American Idol.' There's lots of comments of her being pretty ... and there are a lot of comments on her being a real singer," he said. "There's a curiosity."

After several months on hiatus, I am happy to announce this American idol blog is back, and will be regularly updated again.

Thanks for all of your patience and support over the summer, and I hope everyone's fall is going well.

This season, I hope to do an even better job of keeping you guys updated on what's new in the American idol world.

One thing you should know is I've had to renable word verificiation of the comments because of all the spam. It will just add another second if you need to comment, though. I will be rolling out new features and hopefully a new design in the coming weeks.

Taylor Hicks: Where's the album?

Not to fret, my friends... Taylor Hicks is in studio as we speak working on his debut album for Dec. 5, 2006.

It will be released on his label Arista, and Taylor is working with producer Matt Serletic, who is best known for producing two smash albums for Matchbox 20, as well as work with Collective Soul, Rob Thomas' solo effort, Aerosmith and Stacie Orrico.

Taylor already has the #1 hit double A-side single under his belt: Do I Make You Proud / Takin' It To The Streets, so he isn't exactly starting from scratch. But he says that he is putting in "13 hour days" to make the best record possible. "I want it to be a stocking stuffer," says Taylor.

The forthcoming CD's sound is described as "modern soul."

People Magazine has rated American Idol winner Taylor Hicks as America's #1 hottest bachelor. He tops the list in the issue out Friday.

Hicks says he hasn't had much time lately to "look for love," but definitely wouldn't mind spending his life with the right woman. In other words ladies, he's open.

And if you're a blonde woman who recently exchanged glances with Hicks on a flight, he's looking for you. Apparently, People has sent up an e-mail address to help Hicks track her down.

Also, Hicks will be performing the song "Possibilities" in a new commercial for Ford.

Plus, in more Taylor news, sales of his new single "Do I Make You Proud" will go to benefit a great cause. 25 cents (15 cents for digital downloads) of the single will go to the American Red Cross. What a nice guy Taylor is!

Katharine McPhee signs record deal

If it seems like former American Idol contestants are signing record deals left, right and center -- you're right.

Runner-up Katharine McPhee is the latest contestant to sign a record deal, after losing to Taylor Hicks in the finale.

Ironically, McPhee signed to the same label as Taylor Hicks, 19 Recordings. She will also be working with the same producer, Cilve Davis.

Two songs "Over the Rainbow" and "My Destiny" will be released June 27. An album should follow before the year is out.

McPhee says in the future, she wants to venture into movies and musical theater.

Just goes to show you that just being on American Idol and all the exposure has its rewards.

Taylor Hicks inks record deal

Taylor Hicks took a very important step as the new American Idol Wednesday by officially singing a record deal with 19 Recordings and legendary music producer Clive Davis.

19 Recordings is managed by Simon Fuller, who created the American Idol series.

Meanwhile, Hicks' two recordings "Do I Make You Proud" (recorded at the show's finale) and a cover of the Doobie Brothers' "Taking It To The Streets" will be released in stores and online June 13.

We should see Taylor's debut before the end of the year.

The new American Idol will be named tonight, in front more than 3,000 audience members at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

But last night, Simon told Taylor Hicks he was the next American Idol after he performed the song "Do I Make You Proud?"

Simon's comment could cause a problem for Hicks though, because if people think he's already going to win, they may not have voted as much for him.

Katharine says she's "totally at peace with whatever the outcome is," and that "she's never underestimated the power of her fans."

In London, England, even Princes William and Harry will be eagerly watching tonight's finale.

The two royal brothers revealed in a television interview they both are "obsessed" with American Idol.

So, tonight is the night, and by time it's all over, we will have the next American Idol.

Idol: The Final Two

Tonight, Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks will battle it out for the Idol crown. Both will sing three songs, and one of the songs will be the first single for the winning contestant.

Canadian Daniel Powter will also perform his hit single "Bad Day" on tonight's show. Idol has been playing the song during clips of the eliminated contestant.

Last week's votes were extremely close, with Elliott getting the boot. 50 million votes were cast. Tonight, America will decide who is the next American Idol.

The two hour live results show is tomorrow (Wednesday) at 8pm ET/7 pm CT. During the final show, Carrie Underwood will perform her new single 'Don't Forget To Remember Me' and this seasons final 12 will return to the Idol stage for one last hurrah.

Elliott's emotional elimination

Last night, Elliott Yamin was voted off Idol, but just barely.

Out of 50 million votes, 33.06%, 33.26% and 33.68% is how the votes were separated.

Unfortunately for Elliott, he was the 33.06%.

Fans watching in his hometown of Richmond, VA were upset, but proud of Elliott for making it this far. Elliott is 90% deaf in his right ear and also has juvenille diabetes.

At his press conference to the media an hour ago (1 p.m. ET), Elliott said when he saw the extremely small percentages of votes separating him from Taylor and Katharine, he was "very, very flattered."

Elliott also said he shared a special bond with Paula (in case you didn't notice!) He said he talked with Paula a lot after performances, and she helped support him. He also said since Paula and him are both Jewish, they have a special bond.

When he was asked what a future album would sound like, Elliott said he would love to work with Quincy Jones and Kayne West, and that it would have a "soulful, R&B vibe."

Finally, Elliott said Idol changed his life, forced him to grow up and that he's a better man now because of the experience.

Now that we have 'somewhat recovered' from Chris Daughtry's elimination last week, it's time for someone else to head home tonight.

Will it be Elliott, Katharine or Taylor? As shocking as last week's elimination was for some, it proves that anyone could get eliminated tonight. No one is safe anymore, and it all depends on your votes last night.

All three contestants bring a different style to the competition too... so it really comes down to who is America's favorite. But, I think Elliott; followed by Katharine would be most likely to be eliminated tonight. What do you think?

Tonight on Idol, the final three contestants -- Elliott, Katharine and Taylor -- take to the stage!

Each one will sing three songs -- one of their choice, one chosen by the judges and another chosen by the noted music producer, Clive Davis.

Meanwhile, Paula has spilt to People Magazine one of her worst kept secrets: she wants Elliott to win. She also told People she was completely shocked and saddened when Chris Daughtry was eliminated.. but she's happy to see things are already looking up for Chris. It's reported he was offered as job as the lead singer of he band Fuel.

Also, Simon Cowell was on Jay Leno last night, and said he thinks Taylor has the best chance of winning. He also made fun of Paula's crying and emotional displays and of host Ryan Seacrest's sexuality. Cowell was surprised though when Ryan popped out from backstage and joined him on the couch. Nice.

Tonight's show begins as usual at 8/7 pm central.

Shocking elimination

In surely the most shocking and unexpected elimination this season, Chris Daughtry was sent home Wednesday on Idol.

The 26 year old rocker was thought by many to be the next American Idol. Instead, he was sent home by America's votes. Obviously the fan support for Chris wasn't enough to keep him in the competition.

Chris was visibly caught off guard when it was announced he would be going home; Simon's jaw dropped and Paula teared up. All in all, a totally shocking elimination for many.

Fellow contestant Katharine McPhee had the second lowest total of votes.

Chris is virtually assured of being signed to a major record label despite being elimination, and who knows, he could wind up better off in the end.

Well, according to ABC News, if screensavers are any indication, Chris Daughtry is the next American Idol.

Daughtry's photo has been downloaded for screensavers more than any of the remaining three contestants.

Chris is taking 44.7% of American Idol screensaver downloads, followed by Katharine McPhee at 25.7% and silver fox Taylor Hicks at 20.8%.

But Elliott Yamin garnered only 8.8%.

But what previous Idol contestants were the most popular downloads? Well, Kelly Clarkson leads the pack, along with -- ahem -- William Hung.

Idol rundown; Tuesday's theme is Elvis

Tuesday night on Idol the final four Idols perform the songs of the legendary Elvis Presley. We can expect a "whole lotta shakin' goin' on."

The four will be critiqued by record exec Tommy Motolla, most noted as being Mariah Carey's ex-husband and one of the main people responsible for getting her career off the ground.

In other Idol news, Lifetime Television has announced it will be working with former Idol winner Fantasia Barrino on a biopic of her life. The biopic will be directed by Debbie Allen (Girfriends, The Jamie Foxx Show) and will be titled "Life Is Not A Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story." It will air this August.

Last year's Idol winner Carrie Underwood fufilled a lifelong dream this past weekend -- going back to school. Underwood graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northeastern State University on Saturday. Now that's brains and beauty! The Oklahoma native had withdrawn from school to participate in last season's Idol competition. And look how that paid off!

Gambling911.com has released it's latest odds of who will take home the Idol crown this season. In front is Chris Daughtry with the best odds (-150.) Taylor Hicks has a "serious shot at winning, since he has never been in the bottom three," says the site. Katharine McPhee's odds are said to be better than Taylors. McPhee is at +250 to win. There was no number given for Taylor. Elliott Yamin is the least likely to win according to the site, but he is already being called a "dark horse" in several newspaper articles this week.

So really it sounds like anyone's to win. With only four contestants left and the clock ticking down to the finale, what do you think will happen?

Paris sent home

Well, Paris Bennett has come a long way. From her audition in Greensboro, the 17-year-old Georgia girl has been a rollercoaster ride. But after nearly being eliminated on last week's show, it was just a matter of time before Paris was eliminated.

Joining Paris in the bottom two tonight was Elliott Yamin.

Hard to believe the finale is less than a month away, (May 24) just 22 more days until we know who the next American Idol is!

Still in the game are Paris Bennett, Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Elliot Yamin. Interestingly, everyone remaining except Katharine hails from the South.

Tonight's theme mixes it up a little ... each contestant will sing a song from the year of their birth, and also a current song on the Billboard Top 10. Should be good.

Rumors about romances with Ace Young and former contestant Constantine Maroulis are untrue, according to Kellie Picker.

Pickler spoke to People Magazine and said her and Constantine are "good friends," and Ace is a "nice guy."

Turns out Simon was wrong.

After recently predicting Kellie Pickler would be among the final three singers left standing on Idol, she was voted off Wednesday night.

There are now 5 contestants left. The winner will be named May 25.

On Tuesday, Simon called her rendition of the Righteous Brothers classic 'Unchained Melody' "bland."

Typically easy-on-the-contestants Paula Abdul said "I don't see you raising the bar each week. At this point it was about greatness and I didn't see that in you."

Paris Bennett, 17, had the next-lowest vote total, despite good reviews from the judges last night.

Last night, there were over 48 million votes.

'Love songs' night

Tonight, it's all about the "L'Amour" as the remaining six contestants take to the stage.

The group have been working with Opera phenom Andrea Bocelli and are ready to sing some classic love songs.

Should be a good one -- singing love songs is not as easy as it looks -- we should see even more clearly who deserves to stay and who to go.

Tomorrow night, Andrea Bocelli will perform and yet another contestant will be eliminated... bringing it down to five.

Ace Young going home

24-year-old Denver, CO native Ace Young's performance last night of Rod Stewart's "That's All" wasn't enough to spare him from being elimianted tonight. Maybe "That's All" was a fitting song choice!

Joining Ace in the bottom three tonight were Chris Daughtry and Paris Bennett.

Katharine McPhee was your clear fave with the most votes cast.

Simon Cowell said on Tuesday's program that Young's rendition of the retro standard was "charming'' -- though his voice was ``a little nasally.''

Host Ryan Seacrest offered encouragement nonetheless, saying "You've got a bright future."

Although Ace was a favorite at the beginning, in recent weeks, enthuasm for him seems to have fallen off. There's also been rampant (mostly online) rumours about his sexuality.

Next week's theme is "Greatest Love Songs" and the Idols will be coached by the Opera great himself, Andrea Bocelli.

Paula attacked at Hollywood party: Police

According to police, Paula Abdul was attacked at a private Hollywood party last Sunday.

The American Idol judge was allegedly thrown up against a wall by an unidentified man.

Abdul suffered a concussion and injured spine, according to police.

The private party was thrown by a "Xenii," a private, exclusive membership club that throws parties for celebs and the well-heeled.

Voted-off Mandisa doesn't like "the gays"

Mandisa, voted off on Wednesday's elimination show apparently isn't a big fan of gay people.

The Associated Press is reporting that Mandisa flat out turned down an opportunity to perform at a cause in support of gay people.

Mandisa also added she thinks her controversial views could have contributed her being voted off American Idol.

I guess I am not surprised Mandisa was voted off, after her Tuesday night performance of Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine."

I do think she can sing, but the Shania Twain thing wasn't her best. In fact, it was all over the place. The judges weren't really impressed either.

It was surprising to see Paris and Elliott in the bottom three, since they had never been there before. I guess it shows that most people don't have "the one" in mind yet -- they could still change their minds depending on what happens.

I do think Mandisa's constant "praising of Jesus," may have put some people off. There was also talk she was extremely homophobic... not exactly great news for the gay vote.

Mandisa's elimination was a definite blow though for plus-sized woman... she had the chance to be the first truly plus-sized female American Idol.

It's country time, y'all!/Latin American Idol?

Tonight on Idol, the nine remaining contenders for the Idol crown will be performing good, 'ole down home country tunes.

This should bode well for the southerners in the pack like Bucky Covington and Kellie Pickler.

Hopefully we can look forward to some better performances after last week's generally 'lame' show.

Topping off the country theme, Wednesday night's show will feature Kenny Rogers performing.

In other Idol news, the company that produces American Idol, has announced 'Latin American Idol,' a new Idol show beginning this summer in Mexico and Central/South America.

'Latin American Idol,' will host auditions in four countries and the show will be broadcast all over, you guessed it -- Latin America.

But it doesn't look like we will be able to see the show in N. America -- there are no plans to air it here.

The four audition cities are Mexico City, Caracas, Bogota and Buenos Aires.

According to reports, Jon Secada is being considered as one of the judges. Three others will also be selected.

Maybe they'll find the next Shakira?

Tonight, Ace Young, Katharine McPhee and Lisa Tucker all ended up in the bottom three.

And sadly, Lisa Tucker was the one who had pack her bags and go home.

After last night's poor, ho-hum performances, it was anyone's guess who might be eliminated tonight.

American has spoken!

Meanwhile, online betting site Pinnacle Sports is predicting Chris Daughtry will be the next American Idol. Next week, the site is predicting Bucky Covington will be eliminated.

Tonight: The Top 10 perform!

Tonight on Idol, the top 10 remaining contestants will leave the 50s behind from last weeks show and join the current century.

According to FOX, the top 10 will "imprint their impressions on the current music of our time." Which means there should be some, cool, funky renditions of songs you and I actually know the lyrics to.

Then tomorrow night the usual elim show, where Shakira and Wyclef John will perform their latest single, "Hips Don't Lie." View the music video here

Meanwhile, votefortheworst has changed their pick with Kevin's elimination. Now the site is encouraging people to vote for Kellie Pickler, although it's still unclear whether anyone is actually even paying attention to this site anymore. The site basically thinks Kellie is being dishonest, and "breaks down" each one of her "lies" here

Melissa McGhee was eliminated tonight on Idol.. while Lisa and Ace were (somewhat shockingly) in the bottom three.

Another contestant will be going home next week.

Former Idol hopeful pleads guilty in shooting

Remember the unforgettable Leroy Wells? He wanted the judges to get "crunk" at last season's auditions for American Idol.

But if you thought Leroy's audition was weird (and somewhat hilarious), his personal life is just as bizarre.

Yesterday, Leroy plead guilty to second-degree assault in a 2005 convenience store shooting, reports USA Today.

Tonight on Idol: Top 12 compete

There will be no Thursday show this week for American Idol, so on tonight's show all 12 contestants, male and female, will go head-to-head in competition. Should be a good one.

Tonight's theme is "The music of Stevie Wonder." FOX says Stevie will also perform on the results show, which will be tomorrow (Wednesday).

And also if you are fortunate enough to get the TV Guide channel -- beginning tonight -- is a new, hour-long "pre-game" American Idol show called "American Idol Extra." The show is said to feature former contestants, exclusive audition footage, outtakes and more.

Kevin Covais singled out as worst contestant

Website votefortheworst.com, which seems to pop up every Idol season, has singled out Kevin Covais as their Vote for the Worst contestant this year.

The website encourages viewers to vote for the worst contestant to keep them in the competition, regardless of their singing ability.

Last year's pick was Scott Savol who lasted almost until the end of the competition, to the shock of many.

FOX calls the website "mean spirited" and "hateful."

Eliminated contestants tell their stories

Kinnik, Will, Ayla And Gedeon sat down with MTV news this week after they were eliminated from Idol.

After Kinnick Sky's disasterous performance of Alicia Keys "If I Ain't Got You," the judges pulled no punches dissing Sky's performance. Sky says "Americans can make up their own minds," but she thinks the bad reviews probably contributed to her downfall.

17-year-old Will Makar says his biggest failure was not being able to connect with the audience in Tuesday's performance. But he says he is proud of how far he made it and tried his best to be upbeat.

Ayla Brown says she had a hunch something bad was going to happen. Brown says it was hard for her to overcome the "All American girl stereotype" she thinks the judges placed on her. Ayla admits she's a total tomboy, and when she was on the show, it was one of the first time she wore heels.

Forever-smiling Gedeon McKinney says he was surprised and shocked by his elimination. He says he thought the way he performed and his song choices would carry him through. Gedeon also says he brushes his teeth 3 or more times per day to keep his teeth pearly white!

Tonight, the top 8 girls hit the Idol stage!

With only minutes in some time zones before the show starts, there is already rumors afloat that one female contestant will be voluntarily leaving the show tonight.

This was reported by Atlanta radio station Star 94 this morning.

Although this seems odd because tonight's show will be live, so how would they know?

One of the rumors about is that Katharine McPhee is pregnant.

Guess we will find out if it's true soon enough!

Last night's eliminations of Brenna Gethers, Heather Cox, David Radford and Jose "Sway" Penala, leave only 16 contestants left in the final battle for the American Idol.

We can look forward to at least another week of "thrice-weekly" American Idol episodes, at least until they get to the final 12. (Likely next week).

Then Idol will switch back to its two-time a week format on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

American Idol has continued to rule the ratings game, with about 30 million viewers per show average.

Last night's show recieved 42 million votes -- a record number of votes and viewers for ANY results show.

Chris Daughtry was the stand out of the night with his awesome performance of 'Hemorrage' by Fuel.

David Radford just couldn't seem to catch a break from the judges. Although I think he played it a little too safe in his song selection -- Frank Sinatra!

I thought Bucky Covington sounded a lot better this week.

Will Makar was solid performing 'Lady,' but the judges didn't like it ... with Simon totally dissing Will by saying it sounded like an audition for 'Cats.'

I thought Jose Penala (Sway) blew it tonight with his rendition of 'Overjoyed,' (Stevie Wonder), his vocals were rough and the performance forgettable -- the judges seemed to agree. Disappointing because he was much better last week. Maybe bad song choice?

Kevin Covias sang Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard it Through The Grapevine,' which left Paula salivating, calling Kevin a "sex symbol." Slow down girl, this is a family show!

I thought Gedeon McKinney was unique and different, something this show desperately needs.

Favorite Ace Young's performance of 'If I'm Not Made for You' by Daniel Bedingfield was great.. although I thought last weeks was better. Still, I think he's top 3.

Eliott Yamin's sounded great with his peformance of 'Moody's Mood For Love,' definitely one of the standouts of the night.. he seems like such a natural.

Taylor Hicks performed 'Easy' by the Commodores...I thought it was good.. but not my favorite peformance of his. Judges basically said it was average. He's capable of more, for sure.

Overall, I thought the guys were much better than the girls last night.. tomorrow we find out who will be eliminated!!

Now that the season 5 auditions are officially over, some of us are pining for more brutal audition footage!

I just love how come people think they are the best singers in the world, when they are clearly tone-deaf. And then how they get all defensive about it!

I know Simon can be pretty cruel sometimes, but he obviously knows what he's taling about, having helped launch some of the most successful artists in the world, American Idol winners and others.

Someone's gotta say it!
